Movie Review: Ghost World

Rating: 8 out of 10
Director: Terry Zwigoff
Writers: Daniel Clowes
Starring: Thora Birch, Scarlett Johansson, Steve Buscemi
Saw at: Embassy Cinema,
Waltham, Massachusetts

"Ghost World" is about two women, Enid and Rebecca, who have just graduated from high school. Enid is played by Thora Birch. Rebecca is played by Scarlett Johansson. They look at the world around them with disdain and enjoy finding people to observe and make fun of behind their backs. Rebecca wants to get a job and join society. Enid is resistant to this idea. Enid develops a friendship with an older man, Seymour, a loser who cannot find a girlfriend, played by my favorite actor, Steve Buscemi. As always, Steve Buscemi kicks ass.

While Thora Birch and Scarlett Johansson both gave great performances and are beautiful, you can't help but wonder if the casting director had a thing for large-breasted women, as both Thora Birch and Scarlett Johansson are stacked.

It's very hard for me to say much about a movie I really liked, because there's very little to bash. This is a sweet movie with a lot of charm. It is essentially a movie that speaks to losers and marginalized people. It is probably not a movie that most people will understand. I was the only one in the theater of about 10 or 15 people that was laughing.
