Memorex

Note that since writing this story, someone was good enough to send me an e-mail telling me about a Class Action Settlement with Memorex for their CRW-1622 CD-RW. Apparently, I'm entitled to receive $50.00 from Memorex in damages, and I plan to collect that money. For information on this settlement go here Don't think however that justice has been served. I paid $313.95 for this product. Corporate America still won.

Memorex never responded to the letter below that I sent to them. When I stated that I waited on the line for an entire day to speak to a customer service representative, this was not an exaggeration. After I gave up calling them, I left them an e-mail describing the problem. An autogenerated message said that they would respond within two weeks. Still waiting...

There is common belief in Amerika that it's best to take the consumer's money and run. Why concern ourselves with customer loyalty? There are about 300 million Americans to fuck -- and by the time we get around fucking every single one of them, they will have died and left their children for us to fuck.

If I steal a Memorex drive from a store I will be arrested and do prison time, as I should. But if Cooperate Amerika steals several hundred dollars from me, they can do so with impunity.

Dear Sir or Madam,

I purchased a Memorex CRW-1622 CD-RW drive on 8/12/98, and had it installed in my computer by a professional computer shop called Microtech Systems, Inc. Their phone number is: (617) 232-7405. In addition, I had Microtech Systems install a Memorex CD-322E drive so to insure media compatibility between both your CD ROM drives. I have a Pentium II computer, with a BX motherboard, running Windows NT 4.0, Service Pack 3.

Although your 322E drive worked properly, your CRW-1622 CD-RW drive did not perform as advertised. In the description of the CRW 1622 drive on your web site, and, on its packaging, you state that the CRW 1622 drive can Write and Rewrite. I have found that the CRW 1622 drive can do neither of these tasks without error.

After purchasing your CRW-1622 drive, I spent several weeks trying to get it working properly, and was unsuccessful. Using your CRW-1622 drive, I was not able to create CD-R disks without sometimes receiving fatal errors. I was never able to write data to a CD-RW disk for a period of over five minutes without receiving fatal errors.

At this point, I called a customer support representative at Memorex. The person I spoke with claimed that there was something physically wrong with my CD-RW drive, and made arrangements for me to return it. I however decided to purchase another CRW-1622 drive, and install it, so that I could rule out whether there was a physical defect. I was in fact able to rule out that the drive was not physically defective, as the duplicate drive I purchased failed in the very same way. I returned the duplicate drive.

After spending several more months trying every imaginable configuration in order to get the CRW 1622 drive to work properly, I called technical support again, on 12/11/98. I waited on the line for an entire day. I was never able to speak to anyone, as your phone system continually disconnected me.

I finally gave up on your CRW 1622 drive, removed it from my computer, and installed myself, a Hewlett Packard CD-Writer Plus 8100 series CD ROM drive. The Hewelett Packard drive asserted that it was capable of doing the things that your drive asserted. The Hewlett Packard drive performed exactly as advertised.

Because your drive did not perform as advertised, I would like to return it and get my money back.

Sincerely,

Edward Phillips
